Contrary to what many people think, Vision Zero is not about reaching zero collisions but rather about achieving zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries in the long-term. Here are some of the most important winter driving tips we at Ericksen Nissan want to share.
Get Your Vehicle Ready For Winter
Before you even start driving on icy and snowy roads, make sure your vehicle is ready for winter. First of all, take your vehicle to an expert to check all the major mechanical components. Make sure to pay more attention to your engine, brakes, battery and heating and cooling systems. Change your summer or all season tires for quality winter tires that are specifically made for snowy and icy road conditions. You should also get winter windshield wipers, which will enable you to always see clearly, especially when it’s snowing. Visibility is another important element when driving in the winter, so make sure your lights are working properly. Lastly, make sure you have an emergency kit, which has a booster cables, a first aid kit, emergency lights and blankets that will be useful when you need them most.
Driving For the Road Conditions
When it comes to actually driving on the road, the most important advice to remember is to always drive according to the road conditions. Posted speed limits are for ideal road conditions and not for the winter. In other words, it is important to drive slowly and smoothly and avoid tailgating (tailgating is never a good practice even in the summer when the road conditions are ideal). It’s also advisable to always brake before making turns or entering a curve. Unfortunately, skidding is almost inevitable in the winter but there are a few tried and true practices that will help you avoid collisions while skidding; always steer in the direction you want your vehicle to go and do not apply the brakes!
